The Solvay Composite Materials GBU is seeking a Research Engineer or Scientist to join its Thermoplastic Composite Development team in Alpharetta, Ga. The Research Scientist / Engineer will be responsible for interacting with customers and leading execution of development projects, including lab scale manufacturing duties related to polymer prepreg and composite processing. The Research Scientist / Engineer will also be responsible for development and execution of analytical techniques for characterization of prepreg quality and performance.
Lead of lab based thermoplastic composite prepreg manufacturing capabilities
Lead the development and execution of the thermoplastic composite technology strategy, including the development of impregnation processes and characterization of prepreg materials
Support global and regional business teams by developing new technologies and products to support thermoplastic composite growth
Work with Sales/Marketing/Technical Development, customers, and suppliers to commercialize new product forms.
Assist in the review and monitoring of patent/scientific literature relevant to the industry
Facilitate the development and professional growth of assigned technician(s)
Post Graduate Degree (PhD or Masters) in Polymer Chemistry / Physics, Material Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a Bachelor’s degree with equivalent experience in the composites industry.
Composite expertise preferred. Thermoset or Thermoplastic based.
Strong polymer processing skills, with engineering / specialty polymer expertise (Polyaryletherketone and Aromatic Polyamide) background preferred.
Understanding of polymer thermal and mechanical analytical techniques (DSC, Rheology, DMA, TGA)
Understanding of polymer chemistry and physics
Strong technical and problem-solving skills
Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
Strong communications skills (oral and written)
