Responsibilities

These positions are located at the Veterans Crisis Line in Atlanta, Georgia. The Health Science Specialist - Crisis Hotline Responder works within the National Veterans Crisis Line Program to assist in the delivery of evidenced based practice for veterans who need assistance. Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Implements suicide/mental health crisis prevention strategies;
  • Provides support for the identification of veterans at high risk, and coordinates enhanced care
  • Conducts interviews and utilizes assessments tools to assess emotional, functional, and/or psychological conditions;
  • Completes structured diagnostic and clinical assessments;
  • Prepares and maintains records and reports in accordance with program guidelines;
  • Creates and maintains forms, surveys, instruments, and materials for proper coordination of the different treatment modules;
  • Provides psycho-education and directs advice regarding suicide/mental illness crisis;
  • Works collaboratively with other members of the VA Crisis Hotline Program to identify appropriate services for patients in crisis;
  • Assists patients and family/friend/significant other with issues regarding the patient's mental health issues, referrals, benefits, support groups, and
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Work schedule: Varied work schedule to include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. Tour will be determined after final selection. Tour is subject to change based on program needs. Selectees will be expected to work all shifts.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/23/2017.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-11 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-09. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Note:Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. In some instances, you may need to submit more than one SF-50.

All applicants must meet the BASIC REQUIREMENT: Successful completion of a Bachelor's degree (or higher) from an accredited college or university in a major study in an academic field related to the health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of a Health Science Specialist - Crisis Hotline Responder. To be appropriate to the work of the position, the program and coursework must focus heavily on psychology,mental health, counseling, and/or the provision of social services . NOTE: You must submit copies of transcripts with your application. Education will not be credited without documentation showing degree completion/confer date.

AND

In addition to the Basic Requirement, you must also meet one of the following: Specialized Experience:You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-09 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: independently assessing and triaging clients in mental health crisis; assessing and recognizing mental health disorders; determining when someone is in imminent danger and acting to provide appropriate and timely assistance; providing direct advice regarding suicide and/or other mental health crisis; conducting follow-up interviews; assisting patients and family members with referrals, benefits and support groups. OR

Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you mut have successfully completed three (3) years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a field related to the work of a Health Science Specialist - Crisis Hotline Responder. This education must have provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position. (Copies of all pertinent transcripts are required at the time of application) OR

Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and related graduate education beyond the second year. This education and experience must have provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities to do the work of a Health Science Specialist - Crisis Hotline Responder.
